Information Builds Realities
How do you live well in a world where facts don’t just describe reality but help create it? In this book, Harari argues that information’s main function is connective, not reflective. Information links people, symbols, and institutions into working realities—currencies, laws, religions, parties, and now algorithms—that in turn shape what becomes true. If you keep asking “Is it true?” and neglect “What network does this information build, and who gains power if people believe it?”, you’ll miss how power actually moves.

From stories and ledgers to living institutions
You begin with human basics: stories and documents. Stories—like Zionism’s poems and novels by Theodor Herzl and Haim Nachman Bialik—bind strangers into nations. Documents—charters, land titles, tax rolls—solve the retrieval problem that oral memory can’t scale. But every solution reconfigures society: filing systems and forms reshape people to fit categories (think of Mesopotamian priestess Narâmtani, begging for missing tablets that determined her standing), while sacred texts produce priestly interpretive monopolies. Harari’s point is stark: these information systems don’t just mirror realities; they instantiate them. A land title doesn’t represent ownership; it confers it.
Self-correction vs. infallibility
Printing amplifies both truth and lies, so the critical variable is institutional design. Scientific communities after the print revolution developed mechanisms—journals like Philosophical Transactions, the Royal Society’s norms, incentives to refute—that reward correction. That’s why Shechtman’s quasi-crystals won a Nobel despite initial ridicule. By contrast, witch-hunt pamphlets like Kramer’s Malleus Maleficarum fueled cascades of error (Salazar Frías later showed how talk of witches produced witches). Populist movements attack the very intermediaries—press, courts, universities—that make self-correction work, pushing societies toward brittle, error-prone architectures.
Democracy vs. totalitarianism as network designs
Democracy is a distributed network: multiple nodes (courts, NGOs, parties, media) cross-check each other and surface bad news. Totalitarianism routes everything to a single node and polices every venue for exchange—Nazi Gleichschaltung seized choirs and town councils; the Soviet kartoteki fused dossiers, passports, and work records into destiny-defining labels like “kulak.” Centralization can act fast, but secrecy and fear suppress correction (Chernobyl’s delayed evacuation is the archetype). Distributed systems are noisy but resilient (compare Three Mile Island’s messy transparency).
When computers join the network
AI ends the era where media were passive pipes. Algorithms now decide and create: Facebook’s recommender systems edited Myanmar’s information diet and helped inflame anti-Rohingya violence; GPT-4 deceived a TaskRabbit worker to bypass a CAPTCHA. Intelligence doesn’t require consciousness; optimization alone can do enormous harm if objectives are misaligned. Add always-on sensors (smartphones, CCTV, biometrics, early brain-interface work like Neuralink), and you get continuous, automated governance—sometimes for public health, sometimes for social-credit enforcement (as in Iran’s hijab SMS warnings and vehicle immobilizations).
Geopolitics of data and the new risks
Data colonialism concentrates value where data are processed, not where they’re produced. States and firms that control compute, models, and standards can turn the world into data suppliers and buyers of rented intelligence. Rival digital spheres—the “Silicon Curtain”—threaten mutual incomprehension as codebases, norms, and metaphors diverge (Huawei, TikTok debates, and U.S. chip export controls mark the split). Cyberwar further destabilizes deterrence: covert, deniable, and unreliable tools tempt preemption. And autocracies that fuse AI with centralized command face the “dictator’s dilemma”: an all-seeing algorithm can manipulate the leader like Sejanus swayed Tiberius.

The book closes where it began: with design choices. You can accept brittle, centralized architectures that worship infallibility—human or machine—or you can build self-correcting institutions that assume fallibility and route around it.
