That trust in speed over security worked in early growth stages, but it hardwired the platform for recurring crises as scale multiplied.
The Business Model that Monetized Attention
When Sheryl Sandberg joined in 2008, she brought Google’s data-driven discipline and fused it with Facebook’s social reach. Her core insight was simple: you don’t sell data; you rent access to attention. Facebook’s advertising engine transformed human behavior into an extractive resource—likes, clicks, and identity categories turned into commercial targeting signals. Internal research confirmed what users later felt: the feed rewarded intensity, not truth. Engineers even ran controlled experiments—showing that small tweaks to News Feed content could alter the collective emotional tone of users’ posts. The logic of engagement thus became the logic of amplification.
At first this dynamic seemed benign: more connection meant more growth. But worldwide, the same mechanism accelerated misinformation and extremism. In Myanmar, hate speech against the Rohingya spread through the feed faster than Facebook’s safety teams could respond. In the U.S., political outrage became a form of entertainment fueled by algorithms tuned for virality. Whether the context was violence overseas or polarization at home, the problem traced back to the same formula: engagement equals revenue, and revenue trumps restraint.
Power, Politics, and Denial
Inside the company, content moderation and political neutrality became survival strategies. Joel Kaplan’s advice—“Don’t poke the bear”—captured Facebook’s preference for appeasement over confrontation. Posts by prominent politicians, including Donald Trump, were shielded by a “newsworthiness” exemption, while ordinary users saw stricter enforcement. The Trust Crisis and Its Consequences
The Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018 marked the public rupture. Data once collected to fuel ad targeting was weaponized for political manipulation. Zuckerberg’s congressional testimony exposed a deep gulf between Silicon Valley’s self-image and public understanding. Regulators reawakened, markets wobbled, and user trust eroded. But behind the crisis lay the same DNA: design for growth first, handle consequences later.
Subsequent events—from Facebook’s role in election misinformation to January 6, 2021—reinforced that the platform’s problems were structural, not incidental. Each fix was temporary because it failed to challenge the core incentive system. Even as oversight boards and public apologies multiplied, the ad-driven architecture remained intact.
